I have a 13", mid 2010 MacBook, which has the 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, and NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB graphics. I'm running OS X 10.8 (12A269).
I don't remember this machine being slow when I first got it, but lately it has been *really* slow. Start-up takes about 90 sec., and launching applications really tries my patience. The icon bounces in the Dock for what seems like forever. Then the app's menu bar appears, but no windows open. When the app window finally opens, it's blank, and I have to wait some more until the contents of the window appear and I can begin to work.
If I want to see the Finder window and click the Finder icon in the dock, nothing happens. I usually have to minimize all other open windows in order to see the Finder window.
I frequently have more than one application open at a time. A typical combination might include Mail, Safari, iCal, and Word 2011. If Word has been sitting for a while without being used I find that I have to force quit it. When I double click a Mail message, a blank window opens and the rainbow ball spins 'round and 'round before I can see the message.
I have to force quit application far more often than seems reasonable, and when I run Disk Utility I find that the hard drive is usually in need of repair.
Can anyone suggest a way (or ways) to get this puppy going again? Should I avoid having more than one app open at a time? (seems unreasonable) Do I need more memory? Apple says 4 GB is the max this machine can handle, but I've read that you can actually go as high as 8 GB.
Any help will be *greatly* appreciated.
Steve
